EVOLUTION AND OPTIMIZATION

Sandbox Algorithm

In the last century some architects and engineers have looked to natural systems with the aim to transfer their principles into architecture. The study of morphogenesis in organic as well as in inorganic natural systems has become central for some avant-gardes, who started to use modern digital morphogenesis techniques as design tools. Through those new techniques of representation, the designer can emulate or invent new processes to create architectural forms characterized by the same efficiency and beauty of natural systems.

Particularly the efficiency of living systems is the result of a slow evolutionary process, as explained by Darwin’s theory of evolution through natural selection. The possibility to apply this fitness-based process to Architecture by means of Genetic Algorithms puts in the hands of the designer a powerful problem-solving tool, which can be used, in a wide variety of architectural applications.
